You are absolutely right: Salvation does NOT depend on whether or not one simply believes in "so and so". However, the Bible tells us that the ONLY way to heaven is through Yeshua, and that means we have to believe He is who He said He was:
John 14:6 - Yeshua said, "I AM the Way - and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through me...."
This begins with recognizing that He was foreshadowed throughout the entire Tanach and ultimately manifested in the flesh via YHWH's prophesied New Covenant.
Deuteronomy 18:18-19 - "I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you (Moses), and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And it shall come about that whoever will not listen to My words which he shall speak in My name, I Myself will require it of him."
The Old Covenant says that the Messiah would be a descendant of Abraham through Isaac through Jacob through Judah, of the house of David, that he would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14) in the town of Bethlehem (Micah 5:2), that he would be preceded by a forerunner (Malachi 3:1), and it even predicts that he would arrive before the destruction of the Temple - which occurred in the year 70 C.E. (Daniel 9:24-26). Furthermore, the Messiah would be a prophet like Moses (Deuteronomy 18:18-19), rejected by his own people (Isaiah 53:3), betrayed by a friend (Psalm 41:9), sold for thirty pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12), smitten, spat upon and mocked (Psalm 22:7-8), crucified (Psalm 22), but would be raised from the dead in three days (Psalm 16:10, Jonah 1:17).
Yeshua WAS a highly regarded MAN; however, He was also YHWH Incarnate:
Evidence that Jesus is the Son of God; Who Does Messiah Say He Is: Man or God?. To say "what is of importance is not the man, it is the era" is a slap in the face of the One who offered Himself as a Final Sacrifice for us, and thus offered us eternal life. Yeshua was the LIVING Torah; (not a "new" Torah) who came to kum (establish; confirm) Torah and do away with the rabbinic, man-made "stuff" that had worked itself into YHWH's Word.
Yes, man has definitely "screwed up" in his dealings with YHWH and with his interpretations of YHWH's Word; however, one does not have to "study extra-biblical writings" in order to know the Word. The Bible contains EVERYTHING we need to know! Extra-biblical writings, as you surely realize, are MAN-MADE, which means they are subject to error and limited thought from limited mindsets. THAT is the reason for the "many erroneous interpretations, mistranslations, and downright deceitful proof texts"....
Yes, the Jews knew the Hebrew scriptures. Practically from "day one" they also continuously failed to carry them out properly and whined when Hashem Himself brought them out of Egypt and personally taught them to rely on Him for forty years. While Moses was receiving the Ten Mitzvot on Mt. Sinai, the Jews were in the foothills fornicating, sinning, and building themselves an idol. Throughout the Tanach, we see practically every king sinning against YHWH and leading his people away from His Word - and the people ALWAYS fell for it. Because of their constant rebellion, eventually YHWH allowed His Chosen to lose their land and be scattered among the nations where they have endured incomprehensible hardships at the hands of scum like Hitler and others....(And thank God that He did this because if He hadn't, YHWH and Yeshua would have remained the best-kept secret of tiny little Israel!)
So, are today's Chosen People any different? Nope. YHWH revealed Himself to mankind IN THE FLESH to teach them the things of God and how to live with one another - and they were too blind to see it (and most STILL are). Why? Well, it was easier to stick your head in the sand, kill (or debunk) Him to get Him out of the way, and to listen to the "learned" rabbis, instead (who, by the way, can't even agree with each other about most things)!
Please open your heart enough to realize that YHWH DID attempt to show in His Torah that He was sending us, not "another god" as you suggest, but a New Covenant, using Himself in the form of "Yeshua, an Aspect of YHWH revealed in the flesh"/"The Final Sin Sacrifice"....
Believers in Yeshua are NOT idolators; we are simply people who understand the Truth as seen through YHWH's continuous Word; a Word that begins in Genesis and ends in Revelation.
